Go Where The Wind Takes You
Robert W. Boardman has made Ukraine a recurring and meaningful focus of his programming, using music to uplift Ukrainian voices and support cultural resilience. In 2024 and 2025, he conducted the Michigan and Indiana premieres of Go Where the Wind Takes You by Ukrainian composer Iryna Aleksiychuk, a piece originally commissioned by Marin Alsop through the Taki-Alsop Foundation. He also led a moving performance of the Ukrainian national anthem with student singers shortly after the war began, and featured violinist Solomia Soroka in a performance of Skoryk’s Melody, using original parts provided by the composer himself. This fall, he will conduct the rarely performed choral-orchestral version of Sibelius' Finlandia, a piece symbolizing national resistance, and in 2026 will reunite Midori and Soroka—two global musical ambassadors—for a performance of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto. These efforts collectively reflect Boardman's deep commitment to artistic activism and international solidarity through music.
